Cork commuters can expect localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions.

The forecaster said that very windy conditions are expected, with strong and gusty south to southwest winds and gales near coasts.

Met Éireann has warned of risk of sleet and snow particularly in places at elevation.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution across Cork city and county as a status yellow low temperature and ice warning remains in place until 9am this morning.

ALONE said cold weather significantly increases health risks for older people.

Met Éireann has issued low temperature and ice warnings issued for the southern half of the island, and snow warnings for northern counties.

It was a cold beginning to January 1, with similar conditions set to persist through the first weekend of 2026.

Today should be mild enough in Cork, the national forecaster has predicted, but there may be colder weather ahead as the week comes to a close.

Christmas Day is set to be a dry and bright day for most of the country, with sunny spells dominating.

The national forecaster issued the warning this afternoon, with the ten counties of Cork, Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal and all of Connacht, expected to see heavy spells of rain with an increased risk of flooding due to high river levels and saturated ground.

ESB Networks said crews and contractors are assessing the damage cause by Storm Bran and working to restore supply in 'challenging conditions'. 

A status yellow wind warning for Cork, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford has been upgraded to status orange as the newly named Storm Bram is expected to bring very strong to gale force winds.

It came into effect from 9am this morning and will remain in place until 9am tomorrow morning, Saturday.

Persistent rain, which may be heavy at times, is expected over the coming hours, with Met Éireann warning of localised flooding, and difficult travelling conditions. 

The weather warning will come into effect from 2pm on Sunday and remain in place until 9am on Monday morning. 

The local authority’s Severe Weather Assessment Team met this afternoon following Met Éireann’s announcement of a “heightened risk” for flooding across Cork this weekend.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution due to possible flooding.

The weather warning is expected to come into effect at 11am today.

Throughout today, there were numerous reports of fallen trees across the county including in Fermoy, Ballygarvan and Coppeen, with 160mm of rain recorded at the Beara Peninsula on Thursday as a result of a prior status yellow rain warning.

Met Éireann say that potential impacts include difficult travelling conditions, debris and loose objects displaced and fallen trees.

The entire country will remain under weather warnings on Friday as the worst effects of Storm Amy — the first named storm of the new storm season — hit the country.

The first warning, a status yellow rain warning, was issued for 14 counties, including Cork, and will take effect from 6am on Thursday and will remain in effect until 8pm on Thursday evening.

Possible impacts include difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility and localised flooding.

The warning is in place until 6pm this evening.

Kevin O’Hagan, cancer prevention manager with the Irish Cancer Society, said: “Nearly nine out of every 10 cases of skin cancer are caused by UV rays from the sun or sunbeds."

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has issued a rare Condition Red Forest Fire warning, the highest level of Fire Danger warning, in advance of hot weather forecast for the weekend.  

The gorse fire, which occurred in Loughane, Blarney, shortly before 1pm, was attended by three fire engines and two water tankers from Cork City Fire Brigade and the Mallow Fire Service.

From 12 o'clock on Saturday, Cork will be under a status yellow high temperature warning.

Warm July follows fourth-hottest June in Ireland since 1900.

The forecaster has stated that the possible impacts of the weather warning include frequent lightning and spot flooding.

It comes as dry and warm weather this week has prompted a status orange forest fire warning to be issued for the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

Met Éireann are warning of spells of rain, which will be heavy at times.

People have been advised to expect "very strong and gusty southerly winds together with spells of heavy rain".

Founder of Ireland’s Weather Channel and climate scientist at UCC, Cathal Nolan, told The Echo that winds of up 110km/h were possible along Irish Sea Coasts.

The warning comes into effect at 9am this morning.

Speaking in the Dáil Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, Sinn Féin TD for Cork South Central, asked the Government for support for community groups and organisations affected by recent severe weather events.

The warning will come into effect from 1pm today and will last until 8am on Friday morning. 

A department spokesperson explained the purpose of the scheme was “to provide financial support to people whose homes are damaged and couldn’t get insurance, are not able to meet costs for essential needs, household items and, in some instances, structural repair”.

The storm caused extensive flooding in Midleton and the surrounding hinterland in October, 2023

The pitch cannot be played on until they repair the damage and order new goals, which will have to come from the UK.
