The national outlook for the remainder of the week states that conditions will stay generally dry and settled with “good sunny spells and above average temperatures”.

After 8am, a status yellow warning for wind will remain in place for Cork until 3pm.

According to the national forecaster’s weather statement for March 2023, the majority of monthly rainfall totals were above their 1981-2010 Long-Term Average (LTA).

Cork City Council’s Flood Assessment Team met this afternoon due to a forecasted period of high astronomical Spring tides, that will run until Thursday evening.

Cork is set for prolonged rainfall from 4pm tomorrow afternoon which will continue through the night.

Met Eireann issued a Status Yellow Warning for snow and ice valid from 3am this morning to 11pm tonight. 

Met Éireann's weather warning comes into effect from 6pm on Monday and will remain place until 10am on Tuesday.

Motorists can expect hazardous travelling conditions

Met Éireann has extended its countrywide winter weather advisory until midnight on Friday.

The national forecaster has advised of icy stretches and scattered snow showers with some possible accumulations.

Met Éireann is warning of icy stretches leading to hazardous travelling conditions, especially on untreated roads and paths.

According to the latest forecast for Munster, tonight will be very cold “with a widespread severe frost, some icy stretches and a few mist and fog patches forming”.

Multiple outages have been reported, primarily across the east and west of the county.

The warning will come into effect at 3am. 

Overall it was the driest year since 2011 at both Cork Airport and Roches Point.

The highest number of daily sunshine hours recorded in December was seven hours at Cork Airport, on Thursday, December 15.

The national outlook says that it will be very unsettled with cold and windy weather for a time over the weekend.

Tomorrow morning will also be unsettled and wet in Cork, but this rain will clear northwards as the day progresses

Snow balling by the Lee at Christmas was once an assured annual pastime for young and old alike.

The national forecaster has advised that it will be “extremely cold” tonight with temperatures of below -5 degrees expected leading to “severe frost and ice”.

Communications Manager Paul Sheehan said that the emergency shelter was already packed before the cold weather kicked in and has in this past week seen 80 people staying each night.

Temperatures in Cork are expected to plummet below minus five on Wednesday night, with Met Éireann set to issue a Status Orange weather warning for the county.

The bitter conditions, due to an Arctic airmass, will continue to bring sharp to severe frosts, and ice or black ice on roads and footpaths over the coming days.

“The exceptionally cold weather announced by the Met office will create serious problems for the elderly,” Mr O’Brien said, speaking to The Echo.

The cold snap was set in motion by an Arctic airmass sweeping over Ireland which has resulted in snow, ice, sleet and hail across the country.
