Persistent rain, which may be heavy at times, is expected over the coming hours, with Met Éireann warning of localised flooding, and difficult travelling conditions. 

The weather warning will come into effect from 2pm on Sunday and remain in place until 9am on Monday morning. 

The local authority’s Severe Weather Assessment Team met this afternoon following Met Éireann’s announcement of a “heightened risk” for flooding across Cork this weekend.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution due to possible flooding.

The weather warning is expected to come into effect at 11am today.

It is highly likely that road ponding or flooding may occur only in the low-lying areas of the city due to high spring tides

Throughout today, there were numerous reports of fallen trees across the county including in Fermoy, Ballygarvan and Coppeen, with 160mm of rain recorded at the Beara Peninsula on Thursday as a result of a prior status yellow rain warning.

Met Éireann say that potential impacts include difficult travelling conditions, debris and loose objects displaced and fallen trees.

The entire country will remain under weather warnings on Friday as the worst effects of Storm Amy — the first named storm of the new storm season — hit the country.

The first warning, a status yellow rain warning, was issued for 14 counties, including Cork, and will take effect from 6am on Thursday and will remain in effect until 8pm on Thursday evening.

Possible impacts include difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility and localised flooding.

The warning is in place until 6pm this evening.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has issued a rare Condition Red Forest Fire warning, the highest level of Fire Danger warning, in advance of hot weather forecast for the weekend.  

The gorse fire, which occurred in Loughane, Blarney, shortly before 1pm, was attended by three fire engines and two water tankers from Cork City Fire Brigade and the Mallow Fire Service.

From 12 o'clock on Saturday, Cork will be under a status yellow high temperature warning.

Warm July follows fourth-hottest June in Ireland since 1900.

The forecaster has stated that the possible impacts of the weather warning include frequent lightning and spot flooding.

It comes as dry and warm weather this week has prompted a status orange forest fire warning to be issued for the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

People have been advised to expect "very strong and gusty southerly winds together with spells of heavy rain".

The warning comes into effect at 9am this morning.

Speaking in the Dáil Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, Sinn Féin TD for Cork South Central, asked the Government for support for community groups and organisations affected by recent severe weather events.

The warning will come into effect from 1pm today and will last until 8am on Friday morning. 

A department spokesperson explained the purpose of the scheme was “to provide financial support to people whose homes are damaged and couldn’t get insurance, are not able to meet costs for essential needs, household items and, in some instances, structural repair”.

The storm caused extensive flooding in Midleton and the surrounding hinterland in October, 2023

The pitch cannot be played on until they repair the damage and order new goals, which will have to come from the UK.

In the council report, an account was given of Storm Éowyn’s impact throughout the county.

Tomorrow will see a further mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, with longer spells of rain possible at times.

“We are looking at a deep area of low pressure, not as strong winds but still in excess of 110km/h."

Some sports clubs in Cork felt the brunt of the red level warning storm.

Speaking to The Neil Prendeville Show on Cork’s Red FM, Angela Ducey described how a tree fell through an upstairs bedroom and onto their landing, waking her family up in the middle of the night. 

At a press conference held this afternoon with the National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG), which includes members of Government, the Defence Forces, An Garda Síochána, Met Éireann and other agencies, people have been advised to “shelter in place” as the country braces for impact.

Wind speeds not seen since in more than half a century set to hit parts of Cork on Friday. 

“West Cork and North Cork are set to bear the brunt, but all across Cork people can expect status red level winds.” 

Potential impacts include danger to life, extremely dangerous travelling conditions, unsafe working conditions, fallen trees and disruption and cancellations to transport.

Very strong winds are expected across the country, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and disruption to travel.
