The warning is in place until 6pm this evening.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has issued a rare Condition Red Forest Fire warning, the highest level of Fire Danger warning, in advance of hot weather forecast for the weekend.  

The gorse fire, which occurred in Loughane, Blarney, shortly before 1pm, was attended by three fire engines and two water tankers from Cork City Fire Brigade and the Mallow Fire Service.

From 12 o'clock on Saturday, Cork will be under a status yellow high temperature warning.

The forecaster has stated that the possible impacts of the weather warning include frequent lightning and spot flooding.

It comes as dry and warm weather this week has prompted a status orange forest fire warning to be issued for the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

Met Éireann are warning of spells of rain, which will be heavy at times.

People have been advised to expect "very strong and gusty southerly winds together with spells of heavy rain".

The warning comes into effect at 9am this morning.

Speaking in the Dáil Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, Sinn Féin TD for Cork South Central, asked the Government for support for community groups and organisations affected by recent severe weather events.

The warning will come into effect from 1pm today and will last until 8am on Friday morning. 

A department spokesperson explained the purpose of the scheme was “to provide financial support to people whose homes are damaged and couldn’t get insurance, are not able to meet costs for essential needs, household items and, in some instances, structural repair”.

The storm caused extensive flooding in Midleton and the surrounding hinterland in October, 2023

The pitch cannot be played on until they repair the damage and order new goals, which will have to come from the UK.

In the council report, an account was given of Storm Éowyn’s impact throughout the county.

Tomorrow will see a further mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, with longer spells of rain possible at times.

“We are looking at a deep area of low pressure, not as strong winds but still in excess of 110km/h."

Some sports clubs in Cork felt the brunt of the red level warning storm.

Speaking to The Neil Prendeville Show on Cork’s Red FM, Angela Ducey described how a tree fell through an upstairs bedroom and onto their landing, waking her family up in the middle of the night. 

At a press conference held this afternoon with the National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG), which includes members of Government, the Defence Forces, An Garda Síochána, Met Éireann and other agencies, people have been advised to “shelter in place” as the country braces for impact.

Potential impacts include danger to life, extremely dangerous travelling conditions, unsafe working conditions, fallen trees and disruption and cancellations to transport.

Very strong winds are expected across the country, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and disruption to travel.

Senior council official outlined the local authority's preparations for and response to some of the heaviest snowfall seen in parts of Cork for years.

Crews will continue their efforts, particularly addressing road conditions and potholes arising due to damage caused by the severe weather conditions.

Cork County Council’s severe weather assessment team again convened this morning to assess the situation.

In an update this morning, Cork County Council said the fog warning will lead to poor visibility "and more hazardous driving conditions especially where there is lying snow and snow accumulations".

A local TD has said that damage to roads and pipes, as a result of the extreme weather, may take some time to repair.

Road surfaces fell as low as -8 degrees in some areas of Cork overnight

Siobhán Buckley, principal of Presentation National School in Millstreet, said that they are doubtful that their school will reopen at all this week.

Tonight will again see lowest temperatures of between -3C and -8C. 

An orange weather warning has been issued for Cork.

Local sources told The Echo that this was a very well co-ordinated and organised operation, with a tractor used to place the head of the snowman.
