Cork City Council have advised that there is a high possibility of flooding in areas of Cork city this week.

A period of very high astronomical spring tides is expected from tomorrow Wednesday, November 5 and lasting until Saturday evening, November 8.

In addition, a tidal surge is also forecast to occur during this time.

These factors combined will result in tide levels higher than the natural tide levels.

The natural cycle of high tides for the following days is predicted as follows:

Wednesday at 4.38am and 5.02pm; Thursday at 5.23am and 5.47pm; Friday at 6.09am and 6.34pm and Saturday at 6.56am and 7.20pm.

It is highly likely that road ponding or flooding may occur only in the low-lying areas of the city, particularly during the high tide on Wednesday evening, and on both tides on Thursday and Friday, at the following locations:

  • Morrison’s Quay
  • Fr. Mathew Quay
  • Fr. Mathew Street
  • Union Quay
  • Trinity Bridge
  • South Terrace
  • Rutland Street
  • Sawmill Street
  • Crosses Green
  • Sharman Crawford St
  • Wandesford Quay

At this point in time, widespread city centre tidal flooding is not predicted.

The situation is being monitored closely, and further advice will be issued, if the situation changes.

Cork City Council have advised householders and businesses to take precautionary measures to protect their property during the high tidal events, especially if that property is located in one of these low-lying areas prone to tidal flooding by erecting tidal barriers before high tide on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening and leave them in place over night.
