An Garda Síochána is urging motorists to travel with care as Met Éireann issues a status yellow rain warning for Cork.
The national forecaster issued a status yellow rain warning yesterday for 17 counties including Cork, which came into place at 11pm last night and will remain in effect until 11pm today.
As rain is falling on already saturated ground, combined with high river levels, motorists and members of the public can expect flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.
Due to the weather warning, gardaí are asking all road users to take extra care as inappropriate speed is “a problem as much as exceeding the speed limit is”.
“This not only puts you at risk but also endangers the lives of others around you,” a garda spokesperson said.
Disruptions to travel networks and transport routes should be expected during this period of unsettled weather, with heavy showers expected at times, particularly over higher elevation across the South and southeast tonight.
A status yellow Gale warning from Mizen Head to Malin Head to Hook Head and on the Irish Sea is also in effect until 6pm as Met Éireann warns of southeast winds reaching gale force 8 or strong gale force 9.
A separate status yellow Gale warning from Roche's Point to Valentia to Erris Head will come into effect from 11pm tonight and will remain in effect until 12pm on Thursday.
In this area, northwest winds will reach gale force 8 at times.
