Recent rainfall combined with freezing temperatures has led to very icy conditions on many Cork roads this morning.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution across Cork city and county as a status yellow low temperature and ice warning remains in place until 9am this morning (Tuesday 6).

Met Éireann Weather has warned of temperatures falling to between -1 and -3 degrees, with sharp frost and icy stretches and possible black ice.

Some parts of the country may experience wintry showers with sleet and some snow accumulations.

Cork County Council has advised that the following roads has been reported as being hazardous:

  • N22 Baile Bhuirne–Macroom Bypass
  • R586 Bandon–Ballineen–Enniskeane

Icy conditions also reported in:

  • Nadd
  • Banteer
  • Boherbue
  • Kiskeam
  • Ballydesmond

"Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially during the morning commute in all areas of Cork County," a spokesperson for Cork County Council has said.

Overnight the Cork County Council and Cork City Council teams began treating all Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes. However, have advised that it is "important to never assume that any road surface is treated and to continue to drive with caution in icy conditions."

An Garda Síochána have issued an advisory, urging road users to drive slower than usual and exercise caution on the road.

  • The force advised that all windows, mirrors and lights are cleared before setting out on your journey — do not use hot water on the windscreen as it could crack the glass.
  • Ensure also that the roof of your vehicle is cleared of snow.
  • Dipped headlights and fog lights should be used during this weather.
  • When it comes to slowing down, allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front, and use the brakes gently so the person behind knows what you are doing.
  • Gardaí said: ‘Avoid harsh braking and acceleration. Be careful on compacted snow — it may have turned to ice.’ Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin, however use a lower gear when travelling downhill especially when entering bends.
  • For vehicles with rear wheel drive, the addition of extra weight in the boot will help your wheels to grip.

A number of schools across the county are to operate later starting times due to the hazardous conditions, with reports of many schools remaining closed until 10:30am to allow for both staff and students to arrive safely.

A number of schools with late start times have been reported below, however it is advised to check with your school.
