Met Éireann has issued a status yellow rain warning for Cork and six other counties with more flooding possible.

The forecaster has issued the alert for Cork, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, and Dublin from 11pm on Tuesday for a 24-hour period.

"Rain falling on already saturated ground combined with high river levels will lead to flooding, poor visibility, and difficult travelling conditions," Met Éireann warned.

The forecaster has also issued a status yellow rain/snow warning for Donegal, Leitrim, and Sligo from 2am on Wednesday for a 12-hour period.

More generally, temperatures are set to plummet to lows of -3C on Monday night, with the mercury rising to just 2C to 6C on Tuesday.

"Cold tomorrow with frost and ice lingering at first," said Met Éireann, with a dry day expected before rain and drizzle begins to spread from Munster. Temperatures will be milder on Tuesday night with lows of 0C to 5C.

Wednesday will see a wet start with rain lingering in the east and north for much of the day, but elsewhere it will turn brighter with scattered showers. It will be colder in the north and Ulster, but elsewhere temperatures will reach highs of 10C.

By nightfall, it will be cloudy, with scattered outbreaks of rain easing as the night progresses. Some patches of mist and fog will develop with temperatures falling to lows of 0C to 4C.
