Sinn Féin councillor Kenneth Collins said that a heavy goods vehicle got stuck on Blarney St on the northside of Cork city this week, and that it is not the first time this has happened.

A Cork City Council spokesperson told The Echo that a "significant programme of footpath upgrades" will take place this year.

The planned full tunnel closure tonight will be in operation between 10pm and 4am.

The proposed 80km road, which will connect the State’s second- and third-largest cities, Cork and Limerick, is expected to cost between €1bn and €3bn.

The number of drivers and pedestrians killed on Irish roads from January to March was above average when compared to the same period over the past five years.

Cork Labour senator Laura Harmon, 38, who is currently learning to drive, said: “At this rate, I’ll be in my 40s before I am on the road, because of the waiting lists.”

The incident occurred at around 2pm.

A spokesperson for Cork City Council added that “a consultant has been appointed, and surveys have been carried out, which will be used to assess the location and inform an options report".

The project is estimated to cost approximately €456m, and will take up to three years to complete.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is currently reporting that there are delays in the area.

The Road Safety Authority confirmed at the end of February that there were 8,043 learner drivers waiting for a test across Cork, with 5,024 waiting on a test in Wilton; 1,703 in the Mallow centre; 919 in Skibbereen, and 397 in Ballincollig.

The trial, undertaken by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Bus Éireann, was operated on two buses along the 220 route between August and November last year.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area between 3pm and 4pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

Sinn Féin Cork South Central TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has called on Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien to take decisive action to tackle the significant driving test backlog in Cork, as wait times are “simply not good enough”.

Labour Party councillor John Maher said the route would "create a balance between the city, both northside and southside, freeing the communities of the northside of thousands of HGVs and car traffic every day".  

Ireland South MEP and member of the EU Transport Committee, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, has called for urgent measures to address the spike in the number of motorists caught driving without insurance in Cork.

He told the Dáil that speed ramps are often the only effective means of slowing traffic down, but in his constituency, they can sometimes take several years to obtain.
