Driver feedback traffic signs, measure the speed of approaching vehicles and display the speed back to the driver in real-time

Driver feedback traffic signs — electronic, radar-activated signs that measure the speed of approaching vehicles and display the speed back to the driver in real-time — should be installed at a number of locations on Cork’s N71, says a local councillor.

The issue was raised by Independent councillor Finbarr Harrington at a meeting of Cork County Council’s West Cork municipal district. He proposed: “That this council would install a driver feedback sign on the R592 at Cadogan’s Strand Cross approach to Schull, the east side N71 approach to Ballydehob, and on the west and east side of St Mathew’s Church at Church Cross.”

The signs reduce traffic speeds, improve road safety, and encourage better driving, Mr Harrington said. He said the three locations in his motion were very busy, and traffic was often approaching them too fast.

Seconding the motion, Fine Gael councillor Caroline Cronin said a sign had already been approved for Cadogan’s Strand, as part of a local enhancement scheme, and she would also support similar signs for the other locations in the motion.

Cork County Council engineer Kevin Lynch said: “A driver feedback sign was purchased as part of the low-cost safety scheme works at Cadogan’s Strand and is to be installed shortly, following the delivery of pole from supplier.

“There currently are no plans to install driver feedback signs on the N71, the installation of which would be subject to both Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) requirements and future funding.”

It was agreed to write to TII.
