With more than 6,000 children from 300 primary schools across the county participating in this year’s Cork Primary Schools’ Sports event at MTU, motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible.

The annual sporting event, at Munster Technological University (MTU), will take place from 9.30am until 5pm.

Motorists should expect heavy traffic in the general Bishopstown area as a result of the event.

Extended delays are also expected at the Bandon Rd roundabout, with those attending and dropping off in the vicinity of MTU asked to co-operate with gardaí and traffic stewards and to park only in the designated areas provided.

Organisers of the event have also said that a park-and-ride facility will operate throughout the day from the Curraheen Greyhound Stadium to the Le Chéile building at MTU, approximately five minutes from the event pitches.

The Cork Primary Schools’ Sports event was founded in 1924 by a group of teachers from Cork city schools, and it has been held every year since — except during war times.

Children participating in the sports event will run in a series of relays and sprint races, with prizes presented and distributed to winners after each race in the marquee area.
