The original home of the Cork Jazz Festival is welcoming firm favourites and new additions. Music fans can expect a mixture of swing, funk, groove, and blues from top Irish and international artists.

Announced earlier this month, the line-up for the October bank-holiday weekend includes Cymande, JP Cooper, Maverick Sabre, the Adrian Younge Orchestra, and Lee Fields and The Expressions.

Now in its 47th year, the festival — which takes place from October 23-27 — will feature a world-class line-up that spans jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, and electronic innovation.

The band promises an unforgettable night of punk-fuelled nostalgia and high-energy chaos. 

Mr Mountjoy first had the idea for a mini-festival in 1978 when the cancellation of a bridge event left the then marketing manager of the Metropole Hotel with rooms to fill on the newly created October bank holiday weekend.

Mr Mountjoy, who spearheaded the idea behind the Cork Jazz Festival in 1978, died peacefully on Saturday at Cork University Hospital.

According to festival organisers, businesses are reporting a 12% increase in sales compared to last year, bringing a €45 million injection to the local economy.

“She said she felt like the queen,” said Theresa O’Brien, daughter of Kathleen Goulding, who today celebrated hitting the 100-year milestone.

All roads will lead to Cork this October bank holiday weekend, as the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival returns for the 46th year.

The concerts will feature internationally acclaimed harpist Alina Bzhezhinska, musician and legendary Gil Scott-Heron collaborator Brian Jackson, and celebrated saxophonist Tony Kofi.

The festival is one of the biggest and longest-running events on the Irish music calendar.
