Last October, the Government agreed to make an order to establish such an office to oversee the excavation, recovery, analysis, identification — if possible — and reinterment of children’s remains at the site of the former institution in Tuam, Co Galway, under the Institutional Burials Act 2022.

The appeal document submitted on behalf of MWB Two Ltd stated that the applicants were “disappointed” by the decision.

This conclusion will prove controversial to some survivors and relatives, who believe there were multiple unofficial burial sites on the grounds of the Bessborough home.

“I’m asking Roderic O’Gorman to investigate all of the deaths at Bessborough, and how those babies lived, and how they died, and where they are buried.”

SPECIAL protections should be introduced for mother-and-baby homes, such as Bessborough, Roderic O’Gorman, the children’s, equality, disability, integration, and youth minister told reporters in Cork on Monday.
