Summit in Cork to address energy solutions for the future

Issues such as how energy, industrial and digital systems interconnect will be discussed by a range of influential people this month, says Paul McCormack, CEO of Hydrogen Ireland
Summit in Cork to address energy solutions for the future

A summit in Cork this month can shape Europe’s energy future

As Europe accelerates its transition to net zero, a truth is becoming unavoidable: our energy, industrial and digital systems are now deeply interconnected.

Powering factories, fuelling fleets, and securing data centres are no longer separate challenges, but part of one integrated resilience agenda. This is the context in which H2SUMMIT’26 arrives in Cork this month, and it is why Ireland has a unique opportunity to lead.

Hydrogen is no longer a distant promise. It is emerging as a strategic tool for energy security, industrial competitiveness, and data resilience, the three pillars of Europe’s future stability. The summit will bring together policymakers, investors, industry leaders, legal experts and innovators to examine how it can strengthen these pillars, and how Ireland can position itself at the centre of this transformation.

Europe’s energy system is under pressure. Volatile gas markets, geopolitical uncertainty, and the rapid electrification of transport and industry have exposed vulnerabilities that cannot be solved by electricity alone.

Hydrogen offers a complementary pathway - a way to store energy, balance grids, decarbonise hard-to-electrify sectors, and provide firm, dispatchable power.

Ireland’s offshore wind potential gives it a natural advantage. But the real opportunity lies in how hydrogen can turn intermittent renewable power into strategic energy security, firm power for industry, back-up for data centres, and exportable energy for Europe.

Europe’s industrial base is under pressure from global competition, rising energy costs and tightening climate obligations. Hydrogen is emerging as a critical enabler for industrial resilience, powering manufacturing, decarbonising heavy industry, and anchoring new supply chains.

H2SUMMIT’26 will bring together experts to discuss topics such as manufacturing opportunities, electrolyser production, component supply chains, digital systems and advanced materials.

Also on the agenda will be discussions on skills and workforce development, and the talent pipeline needed to support hydrogen manufacturing and deployment.

For Ireland, this is a chance to build new industries rather than import them. Hydrogen can anchor high-value manufacturing, create export opportunities, and strengthen Ireland’s position as a European innovation hub.

Europe’s digital infrastructure, data centres, cloud platforms, AI clusters and highperformance computing is expanding at unprecedented speed. These systems require reliable, clean, firm power. Hydrogen is increasingly seen as a solution that can support data resilience without adding pressure to electricity grids.

Ireland, with its concentration of data centres and digital investment, is uniquely positioned to lead this conversation. Hydrogen can help secure Ireland’s digital future while strengthening its energy system.

The summit’s agenda reflects the full hydrogen value chain, production, mobility, infrastructure, digital systems, safety, regulation, investment and market design. But the real strength lies in how these topics are connected. Hydrogen is not a single technology; it is a system. And H2SUMMIT’26 is built to explore that system end-to-end.

Ireland’s offshore wind potential is well understood, but the conversation is shifting to how hydrogen integrates into the wider energy system. A session led by James Collins from ITM Power will examine agile electrolysis, system coupling, digital optimisation, and the manufacturing innovation needed to reduce cost and increase reliability.

One of the most anticipated sessions will be led by Garrett Monaghan of Pinsent Masons, bringing a legal-investment lens to hydrogen’s emerging commercial landscape. A discussion will explore valuation trends, technology risk, capital intensity and exit pathways. Investors will outline what they now demand in a more disciplined funding environment: enforceable contracts, credible offtake, transparent risk allocation and realistic commercial pathways. For developers and policymakers, it is a rare opportunity to hear directly from the people who decide which projects get funded.

Hydrogen cannot scale without regulatory clarity and safety confidence. European and Irish regulators, standards bodies and safety experts will examine permitting, certification, guarantees of origin, cross-border corridors and the frameworks needed to accelerate deployment. The conversation will be practical: what rules are missing, what processes must change, and how Ireland can shape European regulation during its Presidency.

With partners from Germany, France, the UK, the US and beyond, H2SUMMIT’26 will highlight how Ireland can position itself as a strategic hydrogen hub.

Ireland stands at a strategic crossroads. With worldclass renewable resources, a strong innovation ecosystem and a growing hydrogen community, it has the potential to become one of Europe’s most important hydrogen players. But potential is not enough. The opportunity lies in execution.

The theme of H2SUMMIT’26 captures the moment perfectly. Europe’s systems are interconnected. Its vulnerabilities are interconnected. Its solutions must be interconnected. Hydrogen is not just a fuel, it is a resilience strategy.

Europe is searching for a credible pathway to energy stability, industrial competitiveness and data resilience. The pressure is real, the timelines are tight, the need for coordinated action has never been greater. Under its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Ireland is uniquely placed to help map that pathway, not in theory, but in practice.

This summit is not simply another gathering of experts. It is Ireland’s statement of intent: a declaration that the country is ready to shape Europe’s hydrogen future. The conversations there will influence how quickly hydrogen moves from promise to delivery, from pilot to scale, from ambition to resilience.

For Europe, the search is on for a clean-energy pole star, a reference point that brings clarity, direction and confidence. For 2026, that polestar is H2SUMMIT’26 at Fota Island Resort from November 18-19. Places can be booked at www.hydrogenireland.org
