Almost 200 events scheduled to take place across Cork during National Heritage Week

Close to 200 heritage events and activities are scheduled to take place across the county for National Heritage Week this year.

National Heritage Week, an initiative of the Heritage Council, is a celebration of Ireland’s cultural, built and natural heritage, taking place from Saturday August 15 to Sunday 23.

This year’s theme, 'Heritage at Risk', encourages people to revive and reimagine the aspects of our heritage that are endangered.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Bernard Moynihan said: “National Heritage Week celebrates all of the heritage we hold dear, involving the wonderful people and places of County Cork.

“There is tremendous credit due to the dozens of events organisers and the amazing volunteers involved.” 

There are events across all areas of Cork, such as the Tracton Natural Heritage Festival and a heritage talk at Camden Fort Meagher, both in the Carrigaline area.

There will be a talk discovering how people in the past bought and sold goods at Kinsale Library, and Bandon Walled Town Festival will be taking place across the week.

In Cobh, events include tours of St Colman’s Cathedral, a heritage walk of the town and a new exhibition at Spike Island marking 110 years since the 1916 Aud mission.

Events from the esteemed Ellen Hutchins Festival are taking place in various locations around West Cork, a night-time bat walk in Rosscarbery, and a heritage tour of Drombeg Stone Circle.

A children’s creative workshop with Lisa Cliffe and Fiona O’Reilly at Christ Church in Fermoy, a 'Quilt and Caint' workshop exploring the historical emergence of the craft in Ireland, and an evening of traditional music with The Cross Keys will also be among the highlights of the week.

Other events include a willow weaving workshop with Cois Laoi Willow in Macroom Library, a heritage talk and photo exhibition at St Anne’s Church in Mallow, a walking tour of Kilcorcoran graveyard with Duhallow Heritage Society, heritage tours of Cloyne Cathedral, and a talk at St Mary’s Collegiate Church about the legacy of Richard Boyle, the 1st Earl of Cork.
