Cork artists invited to raise awareness of Blue Dot waters

The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) is inviting artists across the county to apply for a public art commission aimed at raising awareness of West Cork’s Blue Dot waters.

LAWPRO works on behalf of Ireland’s 31 local authorities to protect and restore water quality in rivers, lakes, estuaries, ground and coastal water, and the Blue Dot Catchment Programme works with local communities to achieve this.

Cork has the largest number of Blue Dot waterbodies in Ireland with 73 river waterbodies and one coastal waterbody having already achieved or having the objective of achieving exceptional ecological quality.

DEDICATED

Of the 74 dedicated Blue Dot waterbodies across the county, 26 are located in West Cork.

The aim of this LAWPRO project is to raise awareness about the fragility of these waters and to encourage the public to take action to protect these ecosystems.

South West regional co-ordinator with LAWPRO, Barry Deane, said the project in West Cork offers “an opportunity to connect people with the beauty and importance of what should be our most pristine waters.”

“We are inviting artists to make a submission to celebrate these Blue Dot waterbodies in the form of public art,” said Mr Deane.

“We’re looking for artists who can help communities in West Cork see the value of these unique environments, understand the challenges they face, and inspire action to protect them.”

Artists are invited to express their interest in the project by April 24. All interested candidates are asked to provide an outline proposal with drawings, photomontages, videos and audios; an outline of costings with specifications; examples of previous work; and a CV.
