A genealogy and archives day will take place at Cork City and County Archives Service for National Heritage Week.

National Heritage Week in Ireland is a nine-day annual celebration of the country’s cultural, built, and natural heritage.

Coordinated by The Heritage Council and running from August 15 to 23, it features thousands of mostly free, community-led events.

The free archive event will take place at the Seamus Murphy Building in Blackpool on Wednesday from 10.30am to 4pm, and a light lunch will be provided. Places are limited and booking is essential — email archivist@corkcity.ie.

Speakers include Hannah Lynch, assistant archivist, whose talk is: ‘A city evolving: Cork wide streets commissioners, 1820s-1852.’

UCC historian Mervyn O’Driscoll will speak on: ‘Cork-German connections, 1939-1973.’

Brian McGee, senior archivist, will talk about: ‘Workhouse records, school records, and other genealogical sources in the Cork city and county archives.’ Historian Michelle O’Mahony will also make a speech.
