A 26-year-old man who stole a leg of lamb from a supermarket and who also stole hundreds of euro worth of clothing from sports shops has been jailed for four months.

Judge Mary Dorgan imposed the sentence on Christopher Duggan, who was residing at St Vincent’s and Simon hostels in Cork.

Defence solicitor Eddie Burke said that all of the thefts were carried out in order to sell the items to pay for drink, as Duggan has an alcohol addiction.

The thefts were carried out at Lifestyle Sports on Patrick Street on August 21; at JD Sports on Patrick Street on September 26; at Aldi, Blackpool, where the leg of lamb and striploin steaks were stolen on November 3; at Lifestyle Sports on Patrick Street on November 5; and finally at Walsh’s pharmacy on Shandon Street on November 18, where he stole €60 worth of Gillette blades.
