This latest advance brings to 30,239 homes, businesses and farms in Co Cork that can order or pre-order high speed reliable broadband

Almost 3,900 properties in Fermoy and its environs are in the process of being connected to high speed fibre internet by National Broadband Ireland (NBI) and will now be able to access the network at minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second.

In a statement, the NBI said that approximately 82,000 homes in Co Cork had been included in the intervention area to enable homes, businesses, farms and schools connect to high speed internet provision and described the proposed €314m investment required as the biggest in rural Ireland since rural electrification.

Construction works are underway to connect 3,856 homes, farms and businesses in the Fermoy deployment area.

According to the NBI statement, over 1,300 premises in this area can connect to the NBI’s high speed fibre broadband and it will be available to more than 2,500 other premises in the near future.

The company is calling on people in the Fermoy area to visit the NBI website to sign up for notifications regarding when they can connect.

Network build works are also continuing across Cork including almost 5,800 premises near Clonakilty, scheduled for connection next year.

This latest advance brings to 30,239 homes, businesses and farms in Co Cork that can order or pre-order high speed reliable broadband and there have been 10,257 connections to the NBI network so far in the county.

The chief executive office of NBI, Peter Hendrick, welcomed the latest extension to the NBI network in Cork and gave a breakdown where the premises who can now avail of a connection are located.

According to Mr Hendrick, there are almost premises near Youghal capable of connecting to the NBI network, nearly 9,600 in the Midleton vicinity, 4,800 in the Carrigaline area, over 6,500 in and around Templemartin, another 4,000 in Kanturk and over 2,100 in the area around Rathmore.

“This will enable those who connect to experience the life-changing benefits of high-speed broadband with minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second,” said Mr Hendrick.

“We are working hard on the ground to progress other areas of the county through engineering survey, design and construction phases.

“We are encouraging Cork residents to visit the NBI website to check their Eircode and sign up for updates.”
