The Cork County Board’s monthly meeting at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday night unfolded in steady, business-like fashion.
It was one of the most low-key monthly meetings so far this year.
A key note in the progress report was the confirmation of Deputy Mayor of County Cork and Garnish GAA chairman Finbarr Harrington’s 12-week suspension following a misconduct hearing. The matter passed without comment from delegates.
Harrington has now served and completed the full suspension. The absence of discussion reflected the Board’s view that the disciplinary process had run its course.
Attention then shifted to underage inter-county appointments, though no decisions were made. Cork are now in the market for three new managers, with Noel Furlong, Donal Mulcahy and Keith Ricken all having completed their respective terms at U20 hurling, minor hurling and minor football level.
The Board indicated that conversations are ongoing, led by the appointments committee, and that announcements are anticipated early next month.
One of the more significant updates concerned youth development and national competition. Delegates were informed that the John West GAA Féile Peile na nÓg will take place in Cork in 2027 and 2028, a two-year hosting commitment that will bring major activity to clubs across the county.
The meeting also heard that the Cork County Committee supports a Munster Council proposal to introduce a home-and-away arrangement for AIB Munster Club SFC finals involving Cork and Kerry teams. The move is based on the challenges in sourcing suitable venues for finals involving clubs from the two counties.
The next monthly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, with a section of the agenda dedicated to reviewing the Cork inter-county hurling season just completed.
