Stop-go system in Glanmire causing delays but outcome of works 'will be much better for everyone'

Road works in Glanmire have left residents frustrated, as traffic is now stopped from three directions near Sallybrook.
Glanmire residents have been advised that a three-way stop-go system in place in the locality will only be in place "for a short time longer" as some have expressed frustration at delays.
A stop-go system had been in operation since 2023 near Sallybrook on the main road between the end of Springhill, by the church, through to Riverstown Cross.
This had already been impacting motorists, but the stop-go has now moved to the Hazelwood junction, near SuperValu, meaning that the traffic is stopped from three directions, with residents reporting being stuck in traffic for up to 15 minutes.
There are four schools in the area, which contributes to a large amount of traffic at pick-up and drop-off times.
Green Party Councillor Oliver Moran told
that he had spoken to the senior engineer on the project.
“The amount of works are going to mean disruption in the short term but the picture after a few months will be much better for everyone," he said.
Mr Moran explained that the project combines both the flood defences and upgrades of the Hazelwood junction, which he explains will mean installation of traffic lights, new filter lanes, new footpaths, pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes.
"Footpaths and a pedestrian crossing from St Joseph's Church to the Hazelwood Centre are also being installed.
"That will allow someone to walk from the steps at St Joseph's Church and cross safely at the junction with Hazelwood for the first time."

Independent councillor Ger Keohane said: “The traffic is heavy alright at peak times in the morning and evening.
“The stop go system is at the Hazelwood Junction now but the stop go system by the Riverstown Cross is finished," he added.
Sorensen Civil Engineering, working on behalf of Cork City Council and the OPW, explained: “The works have been split up into several zones to minimise disruption to the public and businesses.
“The works during the scheme involve the installation of new concrete culverts, bridges, road resurfacing, flood defence walls, and flood embankments.
Meanwhile, Mr Moran added that members of the public can sign-up for free text alerts while the works are on-going, by texting GFRS to 50015.
