The illicit drugs were discovered concealed in packages within the baggage of a passenger.

The 2025 annual report published by the Irish Prison Service showed the average number in custody in Cork Prison last year was 367, while bed capacity at year-end was just 297.

Last week, gardaí seized two scramblers and five e-scooters as part of ongoing enforcement activity.

With the first sod on the project turned in February of this year, the new Macroom garda station consists of the development of a two, three and four-storey building, with three standalone single-storey ancillary buildings and secure parking facilities.

A man, aged in his 30s, was arrested following the incident and is being detained.

On Tuesday there were 425 people in custody at the prison, 123 of them sleeping on mattresses on the floor

Justice minister said bail laws  are comprehensive, but he is “committed to ensuring they are fit for purpose while ensuring fundamental rights principles are adhered to”.

Ryan was on bail for a similar offence when he carried out this attack. He was jailed last summer for 10 years for that offence — a case that included a rape.

His solicitor said it was notable that the being drunk and a danger did not have associated charges of being threatening and abusive and that the accused was generally respectful to gardaí.

Cork Prison has exceeded its own record for overcrowding for six days in a row, with 386 people in custody there on Thursday, representing 130% capacity.

The former record of 372 people in the prison, which has capacity for 296, has been broken the last four days in a row, with 384 people incarcerated there on Tuesday.
