Macroom's new garda station should be open by summer 2028

Construction on the new Macroom Garda station, which will serve as the divisional HQ for the Cork County Garda Division, is expected to be completed and the new station ready for opening in the second quarter of 2028.

A spokesperson from the Office Of Public Works (OPW) told  The Echo that, thereafter, the opening date for the station "is a matter for An Garda Síochána."

"The overall construction period for the project is approximately 27 months," the said.

With the first sod on the project turned in February of this year, the new Macroom garda station consists of the development of a two, three and four-storey building, with three standalone single-storey ancillary buildings and secure parking facilities.

The new facility will consist of 4,338 square metres of modern offices, conference facilities, staff support areas and custody suites.

The new station in Macroom will be located in Gurteenroe and will replace the existing station building in the town, which has been in use since the 1850s.

Welcoming the progress being made on the project, Cork Fine Gael senator Eileen Lynch told The Echo the new station will be a vital piece of infrastructure for the local community and beyond.

“This project has been ongoing for some time. So it is great to see the end finally in sight.

“The new Macroom Garda Station will play a vital role in delivering strong safer communities by strengthening Garda presence and providing the very best modern facilities.” 

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea added: “I am delighted to see this landmark project continuing to progress, with construction expected to be completed by Q2 2028.

“This investment represents a major vote of confidence in Macroom and will deliver a modern, state of the art Garda facility serving communities across Cork.” 

Cork North West Fianna Fáil TD Aindrias Moynihan said that once completed, the new station will provide a much more suitable environment for gardaí working there and a more accessible place for the local community.

The OPW said the development of the new station represents a significant investment in policing, community safety and public infrastructure for the south of the country.
