Theatre Nights: So much to see at Quiet Lights fest
Niall Breslin appears at the Triskel tonight as part of the Quiet Lights festival.
Quiet Lights, Cork city’s much-loved winter festival of folk, traditional, and experimental music, returns today, and runs till Sunday.
Tonight, Niall Breslin is at Triskel, and Caoimhín O Raghallaigh at Coughlan’s.
Tomorrow night, you can choose between Rich Dawson and Elaine Howley at Live at St Luke’s, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Cormac McCarthy and Caoimhín O Raghallaigh at Triskel, and a late-night duo performance from Joanna Mattrey and Dan Walsh at plugd.
On Saturday, there is a double bill at Coughlan’s of Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin and Ultan O’Brien alongside Lucia & Maria, while Aoife Ní Bhriain and Cormac McCarthy bring a unique musical dialogue to the School of Music.
Later that evening, Lisa O’Neill with special guest Elaine Malone take to the stage at Live at St Luke’s for one of the weekend’s most anticipated shows, and Éist DJs will have you on the dancefloor at plugd, with Brian’s Wines pouring until late.
Still got energy? Well, Sunday afternoon brings Mary Lattimore and Gya Valtsdóttir to Live at St Luke’s, followed by How I Became A Wave at Coughlan’s, while Sunday night sees Icelandic favourites Múm and Gemma Doherty at St Luke’s, before Xavi Contraband rounds out the programme with a late performance at plugd.

Next Wednesday, Aladdin opens at the Opera House! Running right through to late January, with performances at different times to suit all ages, it’s going to be a riot of fun with Nanny Nellie in charge as always - plus our brave hero Aladdin himself with that wonderful lamp, and all the adventures you could wish for.
As with any good panto, there will be plenty of special effects, including strobe lights, flashing lights, smoke and haze. Those backstage experts work as hard as the cast out front! Book quickly!
In the meantime, Abba Forever is booked out for December 1, but there just might be one or two left for December 5. There is still time to catch Enda Walsh’s classic Misterman at the Cork Arts Theatre, but it must end Saturday. From Wednesday to Saturday next week, the legendary Cork Shakespearean Company stage That Play, aka The Scottish Tragedy, oh all right, if you must – Macbeth, the Bard’s most enigmatic piece, surrounded by so many legends and horror stories that you wonder if he did base it on hidden works of witchcraft.
A must for anyone doing the Leaving next year, but also anyone who enjoys thrills, gore, and quite a bit of violence in their theatregoing. 8pm start. 021 450 5624.
