Valley Rovers have edge on Ballinhassig in lively U21 Hurling clash

Valley Rovers took the spoils in a competitive encounter in the South East U21 A Hurling Championship at Ballinhassig on Sunday.
The game featured some outstanding marksmanship from two former Cork minors, Eoghan O’Shea and Joe Twohig, despite the weather trying its best to upset what was an entertaining game of hurling in front of a large attendance.
The early advantage went to Valley Rovers as Luke Casey sent over the game’s first score, Fionn O’Shea's reply was almost instant.
Valleys, despite playing against the breeze, had secured a serious foothold on the game, as they were out in front on a score line of 0-5 to 0-2, with Twohig accounting for two from the dead ball.
Claiming the next two scores from Eoin Madden and an O’Shea free to a score from Kevin Dart-O'Flynn from Valleys, left only two between the sides.
Ten minutes before the break Valleys put four additional points on to their tally, including a well-taken point from Shane Ryan, as O’Shea accounted for a single Ballinhassig score. Two more points from O’Shea including a massive free from inside his half had three between the sides.
But from there to the break Valleys added 1-2 to a single Ballinhassig score, the goal coming from a speculative free from Twohig finished to the net by Casey, as they led by 1-12 to 0-8.
The second 30 minutes saw Valleys increasing their total as Kevin Dart-O'Flynn and Sean McEntee fired over and despite leading by 1-17 to 0-11 on 39 minutes, Ballinhassig were by no means out of this contest as they continued to press.
They were rewarded as Eoin Madden was the provider for O'Shea with a goal on 42 minutes.
From there to the 50th minute, three Twohig points had Valley leading by nine.
But from there to the finish, the competitive nature of the contest continued, as Ballinhassig added two more points.
More importantly, Adam O’Sullivan made a welcome return from illness and he provided the opportunity for Sean Lombard to claim a goal.
Valleys added three points during the same period, and quite fittingly, it was Twohig who claimed the final two.
