'Walking together sends a powerful message to anyone who may be struggling'

Broadcaster Nikki Hayes will be the guest speaker at the Cork and Kerry Recovery Walk 2026, which takes place in Cork city centre next Sunday, September 6.

The inaugural event last year saw more than 600 people walk together in celebration of recovery, highlighting the importance of ensuring that people affected by addiction know support is available and recovery is possible.

The walk will conclude in Fitzgerald’s Park.

Ms Hayes, a presenter on East Coast FM and formerly of  RTÉ 2FM, will be discussing her own experience of alcohol addiction, mental health difficulties, and homelessness, as well as the support she received in rebuilding her life.

Ms Hayes said: "I know how isolating addiction can feel and how difficult it can be to believe that life can get better.

“That is why events like the Cork and Kerry Recovery Walk are so important.” 

She added: “Walking together sends a powerful message to anyone who may be struggling, you are not alone, there is no shame in asking for help and recovery is possible. 

"I am honoured to join the recovery community in Cork and Kerry and to stand alongside everyone whose life has been touched by addiction.”

Taking place from 12 noon to 3pm, the free event will bring together people in recovery, their families and friends, treatment and support services, and members of the wider community.

The event forms part of International Recovery Month, which is marked each September to celebrate the achievements of people in recovery, raise awareness of the supports available and promote greater understanding of addiction and recovery.
