Carbery Rangers chase first group win in four years in crucial derby

A West Cork derby with real edge awaits in Union Hall on Saturday evening as Carbery Rangers and O’Donovan Rossa meet in Group 2 Round 2 of the McCarthy Insurance Group SAFC.

Throw-in at the Blackfield is 6.30pm, and already the fixture carries a knockout feel. Both sides were beaten in their opening games — Carbery Rangers by Cill na Martra and O’Donovan Rossa by Newmarket — leaving neither with any margin for error heading into the weekend.

For Ross, the stakes are very high. Their last group-stage championship win came four years ago, against Éire Óg during their Premier Senior days. Since then, results have been scarce, momentum has been difficult to build, and relegation from the top grade last season has forced a reset.

Saturday offers a chance to halt that slide, but it also brings pressure.

Manager Robbie Ahern will hope to have Ciarán Santry available again after being abroad. His return would be a major boost. He gives Ross a focal point, a scoring threat, and a forward who is direct.

Kevin Davis remains their main attacking threat, a forward who thrives on big championship days. Strong, composed, and clinical, he is capable of swinging tight games with a burst of scoring. 

Dylan Hourihane Jnr continues to grow in influence, offering movement, pace, and a willingness to be direct. If O'Donovan Rossa can get both men into the game early, they will test a Carbery Rangers defence that struggled at times in Round 1.
