Deady’s place is secure in annuals of the Cork Business League

DEADY SECURITY’S brief six season tenure in the CBL between 2006/07 to 2011/12 left an indelible mark for the courageous bland of imaginative and attacking football.

The team’s application to join the CBL in the summer of 2006 was spearheaded by company owner Trevor Deady, himself an already accomplished and skilful player having played for Douglas Hall. 

The debutants were drawn in section one of the league’s opening tournament, the shield, along with Super Valu, Finbarr Galvin’s and 2004 winners Roches Stores.

The team’s opening fixture resulted in a two-nil win over Super Valu at the Regional Park on Saturday, August 26th before losing by the same score to Roches Stores on the following Wednesday at Ballyvolane Park. 

Needing a win to stay in the group against Finbarr Galvin’s at Mary’s Park on Sunday, September 10th, Deady helped himself to a brace in what proved to be a comfortable three-nil win. 

However, Roches edged out their opponents to top the group by virtue of winning the head to head.

Janssen put a damper on Deady’s opening first division league fixture at Pfizer Park by winning two-nil on the following Sunday and by the time the Christmas break came around, Security had suffered three defeats, a draw and a win with the consolation of a Mooney Cup second round tie against the winners of SuperValu or Cork Hygiene to look forward to in early January.

A rousing 2-0 win over premier division Cork Hygiene in the cup, and although Cork Airport proved too strong in the last eight, the Hygiene win confirmed the team’s growing progress and would prove to be the catalyst which would initiate a remarkable run of thirteen wins, one draw and only three defeats to secure promotion to the top flight at the first time of asking behind champions RPH.

A first season in the premier division ended with an eight place finish and despite recording eight wins from the twenty matches played, there were high hopes of a higher place finish in 2008/09. However, a poor start could not be reversed and after falling into the bottom two at the turn of 2009, a run of three wins and a draw prevented relegation.

The 2009/10 season began with a run to the quarter-finals of the shield which included big group stage wins over SuperValu and Premier Autoparts before losing to eventual winners Marlboro Trust. 

However, another frustrating league campaign ended in relegation, finishing ahead of bottom club Premier Autoparts on goal difference with just three wins from eighteen matches. 

The season ended on a high, however, with a run to the final of the Premier Cup Final on Monday, July 31st. 

Opponents Herlihy’s Centra went two up through Martin O’Rourke midways through the second before three goals in the last eleven minutes from Allan McCarthy (pen.), Michael O’Mahony and Brendan McGinn secured Deady’s first silverware under the joint management of Trevor Deady and Joe Harris.

The experience gained from playing in the top flight stood to Deady in 2010/11 who pipped Q C Data to the first division title by a single point. The winners only lost three of their twenty-four fixtures, finishing with a healthy goal difference of plus forty-eight. 

Six straight league wins sent Deady three clear at the top by November 24th. 

Despite losing to second-paced Iron Mountain in their next fixture and losing further ground in January, it wouldn’t be until the first week in April that Deady would regain top spot, two clear of Iron Mountain. Goals from Brian Casey, Frank Carley and Brendan Crowne helped see off Premier Autoparts at Ballyvolane Park.

Promotion was secured following a 5-2 win over Super Valu at Pfizer Park on Saturday, May 7th. 

Despite losing to QC Data in the first round of the First Division Cup at Pfizer Park on Sunday, June 5th, then CBL league secretary presented delighted captain Decky White with the championship trophy.

In their final season, Deady made it to the semi-finals of the Mooney Cup before losing 3-1 to eventual winners Anglers Sports Lounge. 

They went one step further in the Premier Cup, losing 3-1 to Marlboro Trust in the final at MFA Turner’s Cross Stadium on Tuesday, May 22nd 2012.

After a Trevor Deady 46th minute penalty cancelled out Jason Coughlan’s opener for Trust, later goals from Joe Monaghan and Coughlan sealed Marlboro’s second win in-a-row and brought the curtain down on Deady’s eventful six season term in the BL.

For the record Deady played 116 matches in all competitions, scoring 218 goals, averaging almost two goals a game. 

Of the forty different players who scored for the club over the six years, John Clarke is out in front with six goals.
