Shane O'Flynn leads a new chapter in the history of Wilton's men's senior soccer team

A new chapter begins at Wilton United this season as Shane O'Flynn takes charge of the club's senior men's side ahead of their return to the Munster Senior League Senior Second Division. 

After a brief absence from senior football, the club's return represents far more than just another team entering a league—it marks the restoration of an important pathway within one of Cork's well-established football clubs.

For the 34 year-old postman from Friars Walk, the appointment comes with immense pride, plenty of responsibility and an opportunity to help rebuild something that many within Wilton have long believed was essential.

"It all started around Christmas when Paul Calnan approached me about helping with the U18s,” said O’Flynn. 

"We got a really good response from the lads straight away and myself and John Leonard had plenty of conversations about getting the senior team back for the 2027/28 season.

“Those conversations quickly gathered momentum and, once Wilton's application to return to senior football was approved by the Munster Senior League, the work of assembling a squad began immediately.” 

While Wilton continue to field a junior side, the father of two believes restoring senior football was crucial to the club's future.

"It's extremely important for the club—and for any club—to have a senior team. 

"It gives young players something to aim for and, most importantly, it helps keep them in the club.” 

Despite stepping into one of the club's highest-profile roles, O'Flynn is refreshingly honest about his managerial experience.

"I don't have much experience in management really. I've done a lot of coaching across different sports, but mainly football. 

"I really enjoyed developing the U18s last year and had actually planned to coach the U17s this season.

"I became obsessed with the tactical side of the game—different systems, set-ups and trying to understand why things were or weren't working. "This year I hope I can put all of that together, get the lads' attitude right from the start, make sure we're organised and hopefully be challenging for promotion towards the end of the season."

His enthusiasm has already been evident throughout the close season as he worked tirelessly to build a competitive squad from the ground up.

"It certainly hasn't been easy assembling a senior squad. We were very lucky that once the MSL approved our application, we got some great lads in quickly and worked together to bring in some excellent players.

"We've welcomed back a number of former players, which is huge, and we're still hoping to get a few more. 

"We've also brought four or five players through from last year's youth team as well as adding some new faces. 

"Overall, I'm happy with where we are, although we'd always like a few more. The talent is already in the club, so it's about developing that over the next year and introducing as many young players as possible to senior football."

O'Flynn will not be tackling the challenge alone. He has assembled a trusted backroom team that combines football knowledge with a strong connection to the club.

"Eric Cotter is my assistant. He managed the U18s last year, knows his football and has been with Wilton throughout his playing career.

"Shane Fitzgerald is also involved, looking after the video analysis and logistics. 

"He's another top lad who'll do everything he can for the team."

O'Flynn's own connection with Wilton first came through his daughter, Clódagh, who has been part of the club's successful girls' section over the past few years.

"Clódagh has been playing with Wilton and was part of a brilliant U12 team that won the Premier League last season. And that’s where my connection with Wilton began.

“My football journey has been anything but straightforward. My playing career was cut short by serious injuries before the age of 21, so I then decided to take up refereeing.

“While a successful spell as a referee also ended, following a serious car accident in 2017."

More recently, neck and back operations have helped him regain mobility and allowed him to become more actively involved on the training pitch once again.

Away from coaching, O'Flynn also dedicated five or six years to serving as Munster Senior League Fixtures Secretary, a demanding voluntary role that often went unnoticed.

"It was probably the most thankless job in football. The vast majority of clubs were brilliant to deal with, but there were always a handful who made things difficult. 

"Eventually I had to step away.

"Now, my focus is firmly on Wilton United's return to senior football.” 

With fresh enthusiasm, a new generation of players and a clear vision for the future, O'Flynn is determined to ensure the club's return to the senior ranks is only the beginning of an exciting new era.
