Border Mystery wins the Peter and John Barrett Memorial Senior Draghunt

A superb timely run on the finish by Border Mystery saw him win the Peter and John Barrett Memorial Senior Draghunt at Castletownkenneigh on Monday.
The cooler conditions certainly helped the hounds and reports from the various vantage points suggested the, leaders were driving the hunt at pace.
When the hounds showed on the finish, they were a few in with a chance of landing the spoils but credit to the winner he saw off all comers to cross the tape ahead of the consistent Clogheen hound Ny now Al from the kennel of Gary and Nicole Freyne.
The Frank Allen trained Stargaze of Griffin United has improved as the season has matured and he ran another tremendous draghunt to fill third ticket.
The winner who came through the Senior maiden ranks this season is a progressive hound and trainer Barry O’Keeffe was elated with this success his first win in the Senior grade.
“We are delighted to get our first senior win under our belt and hopefully he will continue in this vein of form for the remainder of the season,” said Barry.
In the Senior maiden draghunt, the Ger McCarthy Griffin United kennel had a 1.2 when Knock’s Boy saw off kennelmate Knocks Ozzy.
The ever consistent Not now Betty of Clogheen trained by Gary and Nicole Freyne took third ticket ahead of Pixie’s Mexican Dream, Lewis Lass and Cruiser.
After the draghunt Ger McCarthy praised the determination of his hounds.
“Hard to win a draghunt but when you get a 1.2 it is always a special feeling and I am delighted for my young family who absolutely love the sport,” said McCarthy.
The Puppy meet was hosted at the same venue Saturday and it proved a good evening for Tristan O’Herlihy and his family when his charge Starlight crossed the tape an impressive winner.
In another good finish the winner saw off the Denis Dowling Mayfield trained Anyone on the Phone with the Damien Wade Clogheen trained Sleievemish Queen snatching third ticket.
Speaking after the draghunt the winning trainer was delighted that his hound had returned to winning ways.
“We had a few weeks without getting in but that’s draghunting you have to take the good with the bad and my kids are delighted to get another win under their belt,” said O’Herlihy.
In the Puppy maiden draghunt Shanakiel harriers had a 1.2 when the Gerry Murphy and Sheila Cummins trained Naoi’s Girl and Naoi’s Boy came home well clear of the field.
Gypsy Rock of Northern Hunt filled third ticket ahead of Black Paddy, West Cork Boy and Mannix.
The Barrett family would like to thank the farming community of Castletownkenneigh for the use of their land and to all clubs and trainers for supporting the meeting.
