Glen Rovers, St Nick’s and Cork GAA legend Denis Coughlan has passed away aged 80.

In both hurling and football, Coughlan built one of Cork's most decorated careers. In total, he won five All-Ireland medals, 12 Munster titles, and four All-Stars.

Across both codes, Coughlan’s peak years were densely packed with success. In hurling, he won All-Ireland medals in 1970, 1976, 1977 and 1978, anchoring Cork’s famous three‑in‑a‑row and earning All-Star recognition in each of those seasons, along with Hurler of the Year in 1977.

In football, he captained Cork in the 1967 All-Ireland final, returned to midfield for the breakthrough 1973 All-Ireland win over Galway, and lifted a second Munster SFC medal as captain in 1974.

His club career was equally rich. With Glen Rovers, he collected five county titles, three Munster championships, and two All-Ireland club crowns. He captained the Glen to their first All-Ireland success in 1973.

He was also a proud St Nick’s man, he enjoyed senior football glory in 1965 and 1966, adding a Munster club title in 1966.

Growing up in Maddens Buildings, one of the great homes of Blackpool, he played with and against some of the greatest players that the GAA ever produced.

Coughlan was a close friend of Christy Ring and Jack Lynch.
