East Cork JAHC: Cobh and Carraig na bhFear book semi-final spots

Carrigtwohill 1-18 

Second-half goals from Adam Lynch and Luke Meaney proved sufficient as Cobh shook off the challenge of Carrigtwohill at Ballinacurra in their East Cork Oil Junior A Hurling Championship quarter-final, to eventually win by eight and seal a semi-final with Killeagh.

They led by the minimum at the break, after three frees from Carrigwohill minor Tom Walsh had got his side back into contention, but Cobh put up a strong performance in the latter half to pull clear.

Jeff McCarthy and Adam McLoughlin were excellent in defence for Cobh, while Mark O’Rourke and Adam McCarthy put in big shifts in midfield.

In the other quarter-final, Carraig na bhFear came good to see off Fr O’Neill’s by 10, with Cormac Murphy outstanding for the eventual winners in Ballynoe, hitting 0-8.

Carraig led from the first minute and held a 0-11 to 0-6 advantage at the break, but Fr O’Neill’s cut the deficit to three early in the second period.

With less than 10 minutes to go Carraig na bhFear were still in front – their advantage at six – but Rian O’Brien netted a goal for O’Neill’s and would have given their opponents a nervy finish, only Carraig rattled off 1-3 in the closing minutes to pull clear.

The scoreline did little justice to O’Neill’s efforts after a brilliant physical battle, but Carraig advanced, where they’ll face Bride Rovers on Sunday, October 4.
