Carrigaline FC is once again preparing to host one of its most anticipated community events of the year — a lively and meaningful soccer marathon designed to bring together young players, families, and supporters while raising vital funds for the club’s continued growth.

Set to kick off at 9am next Saturday, the annual fundraiser transforms Ballea Park into a hub of energy, laughter, and football-focused fun.

Rather than a traditional day of structured training, the event embraces a more relaxed and playful spirit.

Each age group within the academy is given its own time slot on the pitch, where the focus shifts from drills and tactics to enjoyment and creativity.

From penalty shootouts to crossbar challenges and a variety of entertaining mini-games, the emphasis is firmly on participation and fun — a refreshing change that players eagerly look forward to every year.

The soccer marathon has become a cornerstone of the club’s calendar, reflecting both its strong community roots and its commitment to youth development.

With over 450 boys and girls now part of the academy, Carrigaline FC has seen remarkable growth in recent years. Academy coordinator Alan O’Driscoll is full of praise for everyone involved with the ever growing academy.

“This expansion is a testament to the club’s welcoming environment and dedication to nurturing young talent, but it also brings increasing demands,” said O’Driscoll.

"Maintaining high-quality facilities and ensuring that every child has access to safe, well-equipped playing areas requires significant ongoing investment.

“The grounds are not only a place for matches and training sessions but also a gathering space where friendships are formed and a sense of community is strengthened.

"However, as participation levels continue to rise, so too does the need to upgrade and expand our facilities.

"The funds raised during the soccer marathon play a crucial role in supporting these efforts, helping the club to enhance existing pitches and explore opportunities for developing additional playing areas.”

What makes this fundraiser particularly special is its inclusive and family-oriented atmosphere.

“The event is not just about raising money; it is about celebrating the spirit of the club and the people who make it thrive.

"Parents, coaches, and volunteers all play an essential role in ensuring the day runs smoothly, while young players get the chance to enjoy football in a relaxed, pressure-free environment alongside their friends.

“For many children, the highlight of the day is the opportunity to take part in activities that differ from their usual training routines.

"The absence of structured drills allows them to express themselves more freely on the pitch, fostering a genuine love for the game.

"Whether it’s the thrill of scoring in a penalty shootout or the challenge of hitting the crossbar, these moments create lasting memories and reinforce the joy that football can bring.

“Beyond the fun and games, the soccer marathon also serves as an important reminder of the collective effort required to sustain our thriving local club.

"Community support is at the heart of Carrigaline FC’s success, and events like this highlight the vital role that fundraising plays in ensuring its future.

"Every contribution, no matter how small, helps to provide better opportunities for young players and supports the club’s long-term vision.”

As the club continues to grow, its commitment to inclusivity and development remains unwavering.

The academy provides a pathway for children of all abilities to engage with football, learn new skills, and build confidence.

The soccer marathon embodies these values, offering a day where enjoyment takes centre stage and every participant feels part of something bigger.

Looking ahead, Carrigaline FC aims to build on its strong foundations by investing in facilities that can accommodate its expanding membership. The success of this fundraiser will be a key factor in enabling those plans, ensuring that future generations of players can benefit from the same positive experiences that current members enjoy.

“In essence, the upcoming soccer marathon is more than just a fundraising event — it is a celebration of community, teamwork, and the enduring appeal of the beautiful game we all love.

"With excitement building and preparations well underway, we as a club hope to deliver another memorable day that captures the true spirit of grassroots football.”
