Following concerns about the green appearance of the water at The Lough, Cllr Ciara O'Connor has contacted Cork City Council for an update.

The Council has confirmed that the green algae currently visible is linked to the prolonged hot, dry weather, higher water temperatures and lower water levels.

"Water quality is being tested regularly and readings remain good, including dissolved oxygen levels, with no signs of distressed fish. Council staff are also monitoring The Lough daily."

"Five additional aeration fountains were installed earlier this summer, bringing the total to 10, alongside the annual use of straw beds to help inhibit algae growth."

The Council advises that heavy rainfall and windy conditions are now needed to help naturally dissipate the algae.

"I’ll continue to keep an eye on the situation and follow up with the Council if there are any further concerns," Cllr O'Connor has said.
