RNLI Union Hall rescues yacht racers in difficulty off coast of West Cork

Members of the Union Hall RNLI rescued two people aboard a yacht in difficulty off the coast of West Cork on Tuesday.

The 21-foot yacht, which was approximately seven miles South of Glandore Harbour, raised the alarm after the vessel suffered rigging damage during a race.

Following a request for assistance from the Irish Coast Guard, the volunteer lifeboat crew launched their all-weather lifeboat at 8.53pm.

The inshore lifeboat was helmed by Tim Forde and crewed by Ríona Casey, Michael Limrick and Cathal Deasy.

Upon arrival, the RNLI crew found that both sailors were safe and well, and were wearing lifejackets.

While the yacht was still making progress under mainsail alone, the crew determined it would be unable to enter harbour safely without assistance.

The lifeboat escorted the yacht to the harbour entrance before establishing a tow for the final stage of the passage.

Conditions at the time of the callout were favourable, with a Force 2-3 south-westerly breeze and slight to moderate seas.

Mr Forde said the two sailors “made the right call when they knew they were in difficulty and wouldn’t be able to make safe onward progress.” 

“We would encourage anyone planning a trip to sea to always go prepared,” said Mr Forde.

“Always wear a lifejacket, always carry a means of communication and always let someone know where you are going and when you are due back.

“Should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Irish Coast Guard.”
