Tesco has celebrated the opening of its €20m Fermoy store this week with a special ceremony.

The new store, just off Mill Rd and Courthouse Rd, was officially opened by EU Commissioner Michael McGrath.

The purpose-built store, which will join Tesco’s existing 12 outlets across Cork, brings employment opportunities to 100 people in the local area.

The new shop will include car and cycle parking facilities, F&F clothing, a dedicated Tesco Mobile phone shop, as well as a click-and-collect service for customers and a grocery home shopping hub to serve the wider North Cork area.

Mr McGrath said the new store represents a “significant boost” to the North Cork economy.

“I warmly welcome Tesco’s significant investment in this new state-of-the-art store in Fermoy,” said Mr McGrath.

“This new store will create valuable employment in the local community, and represents a vote of confidence in the town and the wider hinterland it will serve.

“This investment is a significant boost to the local economy, and it is heartening to know that local producers will be supported.

“I would like to wish the management, staff, suppliers, and of course the customers every success with this exciting new Tesco development in Fermoy.”

Store manager Damien Geraghty said he is looking forward to welcoming customers.

“The construction of this store has been a huge undertaking, and we are really excited now for customers to come and experience a modern shopping environment and be served by our team from the local area,” he said.

“With the very best branded and Tesco own-label products, many of which are sourced from Irish suppliers, we’re sure we have something for everyone.”

The new store was designed with a natural stone cladding and complementary landscaping to blend with the town’s heritage.

The retailer will stock a selection of Cork-based brands, including Silver Pail, Velo Coffee, Folláin, Horgan’s Delicatessen, Hodgins Sausages, Ór butter, and more.
