A Garda spokesperson told The Echo: “Gardaí in Togher are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a man following a fatal house fire in Togher, Cork on Friday evening, 31 January 2025.

A Garda investigation has begun following the death of a man in his 60s in a house fire in Togher last night, where neighbours helped a woman to escape, according to a local councillor.

The fire was contained to one room in the house, Cork City Fire Brigade have confirmed. 

The man, confirmed to be in his 60s, was found in the house after the fire brigade entered, while a woman managed to leave the house as they arrived and was treated by ambulances at the scene for smoke inhalation.

A Garda spokesperson told The Echo: “Gardaí in Togher are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a man following a fatal house fire in Togher, Cork on Friday evening, 31 January 2025.

“At approximately 6.50pm Gardaí and Fire Services were alerted to a house fire on Togher Road. The fire was brought under control by Fire Services and the body of a man (aged in his 60s) was discovered deceased inside the property.

“Investigating Gardaí have preserved the scene as they work to determine the cause of the fire. The State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will take place on the body of the deceased in due course.

“The results of the post-mortem, along with a technical examination of the scene, will guide the ongoing Garda investigation. Investigations are ongoing.” 

Local Councillor Fergal Dennehy said: “I want to express my deepest condolences to the family of the man who tragically lost his life in the devastating fire that has deeply impacted our entire community.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that will affect many lives,” he said. "I want to commend the local neighbours who stepped in to assist a woman in safely exiting the premises. Their bravery and quick action in such a difficult situation are truly commendable.

“My thoughts are with the family, friends, and everyone affected by this terrible heartbreaking event.” 

Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said: “Desperately sad to hear of a man’s death in a fire on Togher road. My condolences to him and his family, and loved ones at this very difficult time and in such traumatic circumstances.

“A huge shock to them, and to the community particularly in the square, an upsetting and traumatic night, and unfortunately ultimately a tragic night. The sympathies of the wider community in Togher go to his family.”
