Ger Ryan, Third Officer at Cork City Fire Brigade told The Echo: “There unfortunately has been a fatality at the scene."

A man has died following a residential fire in Togher Road this evening. The fire brigade attended the scene at around 6.30pm this evening.

The man was found in the house after the fire brigade entered, while a woman managed to leave the house as they arrived and was treated by ambulances at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Ger Ryan, Third Officer at Cork City Fire Brigade told The Echo: “There unfortunately has been a fatality at the scene.

“It was a domestic fire, three units responded and when we got into the house we found a person deceased. We made every effort, dealt with the fire then found the person.” He added: “The fire was contained to the one room in the house.

“Gardaí and ambulances were in attendance. There were two people in the house, as we arrived one female left and she was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

“There will be an investigation starting now as to what started the fire, and we will be helping the Gardaí with that.” A Garda spokesperson told The Echo: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently attending the scene of a fire at a domestic residence on the Togher Road in Cork this evening, Friday 31st January 2025.

“Once the premises has been made safe by fire services it will be held subject to a technical examination by Gardaí.

“No further information is available at this time.”
