Thousands of properties still without power in Cork as weather warnings remain in place

“With a Met Éireann low temperature warning in place for the rest of the week, we anticipate power restoration will continue for a number of days in the worst affected areas,” an ESB spokesperson said.

There are approximately 4,000 ESB customers in Cork currently without power, with some areas expected to remain impacted overnight.

Nationwide, there are 17,000 premises including homes, farms and businesses that are experiencing outages, with the majority of Cork customers affected living or working in the areas bordering Kerry and Limerick.

This comes as Met Éireann issued a national status yellow snow and ice warning today, which will be in effect until midday tomorrow, as well as extending it’s countrywide status yellow low temperature and ice warning, which was issued on Saturday, to last until early on Friday morning.

The national forecaster has said that temperatures will struggle to get above freezing during daytime hours, and that there will be very cold nights ahead with frost, ice and lying snow expected across the county.

While ESB crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible, some customers in Cork could remain impacted until as late as 7pm tomorrow.

This is according to the real-time PowerCheck map, which can be accessed here.

“With a Met Éireann low temperature warning in place for the rest of the week, we anticipate power restoration will continue for a number of days in the worst affected areas,” an ESB spokesperson said.

“This is due to the hazardous weather conditions and challenges faced by our restoration teams when safely accessing fault sites on snow- and ice-covered roads and terrain.

“We acknowledge the disruption to family and commercial life this causes and thank impacted customers, especially those who will remain without power over the coming days.”

The spokesperson further stated that if members of the public come across fallen wires or damaged electricity networks over the coming days, to never touch or approach these as they are live and extremely dangerous.

Any damage to electricity infrastructure can be reported by calling 1800 372 999.
