Cork University Hospital (CUH) has announced extended visitor restrictions amid norovirus outbreak.

The Health Service Executive’s (HSE) South West branch, said it has been necessary to introduce further visitor restrictions at CUH with immediate effect.

Staff are aiming to reduce the spread of the virus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, by implementing further visitor restrictions.

The extension comes following an announcement yesterday that two wards at the facility were affected, with other wards under observation.

Norovirus causes diarrhoea and vomiting and is one of the most common stomach bugs in Ireland.

Compassionate grounds

From today, visiting is permitted only on compassionate grounds, and visitors must contact the ward in advance of arrival.

This can be done by calling the hospital switchboard on 021 492 2000 and asking to be put through to the individual ward.

Chief executive at CUH, Jennifer Kearney said the extension comes in light of the increasing cases of Norovirus circulating at the hospital.

“The virus can spread quickly and easily, so we are taking these measures to contain the virus more quickly and keep patients and staff safe,” said Ms Kearney.

“These measures will be lifted as soon as possible when clinical circumstances allow.

“Infection control procedures are also in place on the wards and will remain until further notice.”

According to daily trolley figures, published by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), there are currently 29 patients being treated without a bed at CUH, with a further 18 on trolleys at the Mercy and 12 at Bantry General Hospital.
