All About Cork: Douglas night courses return for autumn months

Registration for the adult education night courses at Douglas Community School and Ashton School are due to open shortly.

As we head into August thoughts will soon be turning to events for the autumn.

Registration for the adult education night courses at Douglas Community School and Ashton School are due to open shortly.

You can register online at dcscork.ie and follow the link to adult education and for Ashton it’s https://ashtonadulteducation.ie/ A wide variety of classes, from arts and crafts to yoga, golf for beginners, to language classes and dressmaking, is on offer at Douglas Community School.

You can enroll online by going to dcscork.ie and following the link to Adult Education.

There are also taking postal enrolments in the coming weeks (from September 2) and they can be sent to the Adult Education Office, Douglas Community School, Clermont Avenue, Douglas.

The school runs two types of general courses, multi-term and single term courses.

Single term courses normally run for 10 weeks and are self-contained.

They are repeated in the following term, but do not progress to higher levels.

The multi-term courses generally continue for three terms to give participants an opportunity to develop their talents.

These courses progress to a higher standard as the year goes on. Participants can join a class for all or one of the terms.

All courses commence during the week commencing on Monday, September 23, unless otherwise stated.

The school also offers reduced fees for OAP’s on application during enrolment and they also keep a number of places on courses for long-term unemployed, which are free of charge.

These are available by calling to the office in advance of the enrolment night and confidentiality is assured.

At Ashton School you can also enroll online at www.ashton.ie, using laser or credit card, from September 2.

Postal enrolments are also being accepted from that date and must be sent to Adult Education Office, Ashton School, Blackrock Road, Cork.

They are also holding an enrolment night on Wednesday, September 11, from 7 to 8pm at the school.

Some of the classes the school offers include: Cooking With Glena, Psychology For Life; Dressmaking, Oral Irish for Leaving Cert, Couch to 5km, Painting in Watercolours, Facebook and Twitter, Pilates, Computers and guitar classes for beginners and advanced.

They also offer a baby massage course on Wednesday afternoons for babies who are more than four weeks old.

Classes commence on week beginning Monday, September 23.

All students must enroll before attending classes.

There is also a reduced fee for senior citizens or unwaged.

With classes due to start in a few weeks early registration is encouraged once open.

Comhaltas na Dúglaise to take part in Fleadh Cheoil

Many members of Comhaltas na Dúglaise, competitors, supporters and also the hundreds of thousands from Ireland and all over the world will attend the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in the week ahead in Wexford.

Cork County Comhaltas branches have a very large contingent of qualifiers for the Fleadh. The dancing competitions will be held on Thursday, August 8 and Friday, August 9, while the music, singing, storytelling etc competitions take place on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11.

Meanwhile a large contingent of young and not so young musicians from Comhaltas na Dúglaise played music and sang for a birthday party in Bishopscourt Nursing Home recently.

School footpath greenlight

The planned footpath access from the main Cork Road at Shannon Park to the Education Complex of the Gaelscoil, Gaelcholáiste and Sonas which has been delayed for years has been given the greenlight.

Work is expected to commence this month and the footpath is to be ready for the schools’ reopening.

Men’s Shed

A crew from the Carrigaline Men’s Shed took part in the Robert’s Cove Vintage Festival yesterday.

They had a number of restored stationary engines on display which proved very popular. Also on show was a selection of products made by the men in the Shed.

This Saturday a group of Shedders will visit Saint Colman’s Cathedral in Cobh where they will be given a guided tour.

On Wednesday, August 14, a group from the Shed will travel by train to Limerick for a day out while on Thursday, August 22, the Men’s Shed will hold a barbecue.

Meanwhile all the usual activities continue in the shed.

Last Monday the walking group enjoyed a visit to Currabinny Wood, the Shed choir which practices on Tuesday are learning new songs and hope to do one or two performances in the month ahead.

Lions Club family festival

Carrigaline and District Lions Club presents a family festival at the Carrigaline Community Park on Sunday, September 15, 1pm to 5pm.

The event is in aid of the refurbishment of the Carrigaline playground, entry is free but cash is needed on the day for some of the activities. There will be lots of Lego, music, bouncy castle and a grand finale ball race at a cost €5 with prizes for the winner.
