ESB works to secure the historic Buingea bridge in the Carrigadrohid reservoir near Macroom have been welcomed by Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West, Aindrias Moynihan.

The ESB is commencing stabilisation works to preserve the historic Buingea Bridge in the Carrigadrohid reservoir near Macroom.

The stone arch bridge, familiar on the approach to Macroom from the east on the N22, dates to the mid-1800s and originally formed part of the old Mid-Cork railway network.

Partially submerged since the Lee hydroelectric scheme flooded the valley in the 1950s, the bridge remains one of the most visible reminders of the pre-dam landscape.

The work will stabilise the structure and also preserve the historic stonework and character of the bridge, with completion expected by the end of the summer, subject to water levels.

Cork North West Fianna Fáil TD Aindrias Moynihan has welcomed the commencement of the works.

He said the works are being carried out to protect an important piece of local heritage.

“This bridge carries a mid-Cork story of connectivity and the communities that once lived here,” Mr Moynihan said.

“While the railway tracks are silenced, the iconic bridge speaks loudly of a bygone era.

“Securing it now ensures this piece of our heritage is protected for future generations.”
