Cork voters will be taking to the polling stations this week to have their say as to who should represent them at a local level.

Polling takes place on Friday and there are five electoral areas of the city with 31 members set to be elected to Cork City Council.

A total of 76 candidates have been officially nominated to stand in the upcoming elections in the city this year- a 7% decrease on the numbers declared in 2019.

In the city, Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin are the parties with the joint highest number of candidates at 12 each followed by Fine Gael with 10 candidates.

Electoral areas

The five electoral areas in Cork city are South Central (six seats), South West (seven seats), South East (six seats), North East (six seats) and North West (six seats).

In the South Central ward there are 15 candidates running – three Independents, two Fianna Fáil candidates, two from Sinn Féin and one each from Fine Gael, the Green Party, the Social Democrats, Ireland First, the Labour Party, People Before Profit-Solidarity, Independent Ireland and Aontú.

The South West ward, the ward with the highest number of seats, also has the highest number of candidates.

With 17 people running, Fianna Fáil make up the highest number with four candidates, followed by Fine Gael, Sinn Féin and Independents, with three candidates each.

There is also one Green Party candidate, one Social Democrats candidate, one Labour Party candidate and one Aontú candidate running.

In the South East ward, Fine Gael has three candidates running, with three Independent hopefuls, two from Fianna Fáil, two Sinn Féin candidates, and one each from the Green Party, the Social Democrats, the Labour Party, The Irish People, Workers’ Party and Rabharta.

In the North East ward, there are 15 candidates vying for election – two from Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Independents, along with one from the Green Party, one from the Social Democrats, one from the Labour Party, one from Independent Ireland, one Workers’ Party candidate, one People Before Profit-Solidarity candidate and one from The Irish People,.

Finally, the North West ward has the fewest number of candidates running at 13.

Of those, Sinn Féin has the highest number of candidates with three hopefuls running, followed by Fianna Fáil (two), Fine Gael (one), Green Party (one), Social Democrats (one), Labour Party (one), Aontú (one), People Before Profit-Solidarity (one), The Irish People (one) and one Independent.

Cork City Council said the number of female candidates has increased with 27 candidates having declared, amounting to 35.5% of the total number of candidates.

This is increased from 24 in 2019 which amounted to 29% of the total number candidates.

A total of 158,902 people in Cork city are registered to vote in the upcoming local elections – an increase of approximately 10,000 electors since last year.

The last of the polling cards for city voters were expected to be delivered by the beginning of this week. 

However, polling cards are issued for information purposes only and are not required to vote.

All electors should bring some form of ID with them to their polling station as they may be required to prove evidence of identity.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.
