An exhibition showcasing the work of architecture students from UCC and MTU has opened at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education at the Nano Nagle Centre, Douglas Street.

The public exhibition, entitled ‘The ‘CCAE Architecture Summer Show 2024’, is on display until June 21 and is open from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 5pm.

The showcase, part of the Building Change Initiative, features work from first to fourth-year students of the BSc in Architecture at UCC and MTU.

Both universities are partners in the collaborative Building Change Initiative programme, that is working to radically transform the architecture curriculum in Ireland’s six architecture schools.

Sustainability

The new approach seeks to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to address complex issues around sustainability and decarbonisation through architecture.

Lecturer and Building Change curriculum lead Maroun Tabbal said: “This summer show is a great way to cap off an exciting year of learning for our students and a fantastic opportunity for their friends, family and the general public to come along and see the brilliant work they are producing.

“Our students are the future of architecture in Ireland and their projects demonstrate how prepared they are to take on the challenges our society faces in this design and building for a sustainable future.”

“Sustainability is no longer a ‘nice to have’, it’s essential that economic, social and environmental sustainability is at the core of everything we design or build going forward, therefore it must also be at the core of our architectural curricula,” he said.

“We look forward to exhibiting the work of these great young minds to the public.”

The opening night of the exhibition hosted the EU Mies Awards ‘Young Talent in Architecture 2023’, as three of the projects featured in the show were shortlisted for the prestigious awards, held in Venice last summer.

Visitors will have the opportunity to discuss and share ideas behind the work with students and staff of UCC and MTU.
