A spokesperson for the court service confirmed that the case was filed on March 8 by Adrian McCarthy against Derek Blighe, adding “It is a defamation case.”

Derek Blighe fronts Ireland First, a party that was formed in 2023.

A CORK businessman is suing Derek Blighe and the political party of which he is president, Ireland First.

Adrian McCarthy was previously a shareholder in a company which owns a B&B in Fermoy which is earmarked to be used an accommodation centre for people seeking international protection.

Mr Blighe, an anti-immigration campaigner, and his party have posted a number of videos on social media in relation to the property.

A spokesperson for the court service confirmed that the case 2024 1267 P was filed on March 8 by Adrian McCarthy against Derek Blighe, adding “It is a defamation case.” 

Mr Blighe addressed the claims that he was being sued in a video on X on Wednesday evening, saying that he had received no notification of such a case.

Ireland First was formed in 2023 and is running a number of candidates in the upcoming European and local elections.

The Echo has reached out to Holmes O’Malley Sexton LLP, who are representing Mr McCarthy, for comment.
