Sinn Féin announces second candidate to contest local elections in Cork North East

Sinn Féin has announced that Christa Daley has been selected to run for the party in June’s local election in the Cork City North East ward.

Ms Daley lives in the Glen with her partner and their two children, is qualified in youth and community development, and currently works in the public sector.

She will join Mandy O’Leary-Hegarty on the ticket, and said following her selection, “We have two working mothers on the ticket who understand the difficulties faced by those in the north east and across the city.

“I believe that we can be a strong voice for women and for the north east communities as a whole in City Hall."

Housing

Ms Daley said she wants to see a major ramp-up in the delivery of affordable and social housing and to improve the standard of housing in local council estates.

“I am a proud member of the Glentrasna Residents’ Association and have played a key role in campaigning for improved housing maintenance responses from Cork City Council.

“We are seeing results now but this is an issue across the north east – I believe we need to see housing maintenance revitalised and regeneration projects, in Mayfield especially, progressed at pace.

“I love our communities in the north east – we’re tightly knit, we’re strong and we’re very proud. I believe that we need strong, proud voices in City Hall and that is what I will bring to the table," she said.

'Forgotten' voices

Ms Daley said she has witnessed firsthand the impact of the housing crisis on ordinary people in her community.

"I know the devastating effects this is having. But I have also seen the transformative change that can happen when people access social and affordable housing.

“That gives me hope – we need to build more homes because four secure walls and a roof over your head can change lives.”

Ms Daley added that she was excited to be working with Mandy O’Leary Hegarty for the campaign ahead, saying, “I believe that Sinn Féin are bringing forward a positive, exciting message of change – change for our communities and change in City Hall.

“We will bring voices to the chamber that are so often forgotten."
