A Cork teenager who has overcome Hodgkin’s lymphoma twice was given an unforgettable surprise live on air when he was invited to spend a day with the National Ambulance Service.
Sixteen-year-old Dylan Punch, a student at Coláiste Éamann Rís, shared his inspiring story during an appearance on Cork’s 96FM.
Dylan, who hopes to one day work as a paramedic, became seriously unwell in early 2024 after contracting covid-19.
Dylan was later diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Following several rounds of chemotherapy, he was declared cancer-free in August 2024. However, the disease returned in November, leading to further treatment, and care at Crumlin Children’s Hospital, with his mother Elaine by his side throughout.
Dylan announced to classmates that he was cancer-free at his school debs in June.
During his interview, Dylan explained that his ambition to become a paramedic came from the ambulance crews who cared for him throughout his treatment.
His story prompted Ger O’Dea of the National Ambulance Service to phone into the programme with a special invitation.
Offering Dylan the chance to accompany him for a day visiting local ambulance stations and emergency vehicles, Mr O’Dea said: “It’s an unbelievable story and a great success story. We’re delighted to hear it.”
Explaining that much of his work involves transporting seriously ill children and teenagers to hospital, he said it is rare to learn what happens afterwards.
“To hear Dylan’s story is absolutely brilliant. Great success. And the fact, even better, that he wants to be a paramedic. I’m out and about today for a few hours out of the office, so, I’d like to take Dylan with me in the car for a little while if he’s interested.”
