Emergency services attend fire at Cork city pharmacy

FIRE and emergency services have responded to a fire at a pharmacy in Douglas this evening.

A spokesperson for the fire services confirmed that three units responded at approximately 6.20pm this evening, and took just under two hours to put out the fire at a pharmacy in Broadale, Maryborough Hill.

Fire Officer Ger Ryan told The Echo at 8.15pm that the fire had just been fully extinguished, saying that three units attended the blaze, and used breathing apparatuses and high pressure hoses to put the fire out.

“It looks like an electrical fire within the premises,” Ryan said, adding that though nobody was there at the time to get injured, the pharmacy has been extremely damaged.

“There is heavy smoke damage and some fire damage, the entire contents of the shop are probably a write-off due to the smoke damage with it being a pharmacy and having medical supplies.” 

He added that there is a dental practice, a doctor’s surgery and a beautician’s in the same area, and that all have been affected by the smoke, suffering light to medium smoke damage which will require “a full deep clean”, particularly for those which stock medical supplies.

“There was nobody hurt, nobody was in the building at the time, all the businesses were empty and locked up for the evening,” he confirmed.
