Man jailed for stealing a variety of items from Cork shops

A man who was using heroin and cannabis and was caught stealing a variety of property from shops, including Yankee candles, washing pods and alcohol, has been jailed for four months.

Kieran Doyle, aged 30, of Cork Simon Community, pleaded guilty at Cork District Court to several charges of shoplifting and possession of drugs for his own use.

Solicitor Eddie Burke said: “Kieran Doyle is originally from South Africa. He came to Cork and fell into homelessness in the city and has been living with the Simon Community.

“He is now clear of drugs, but unfortunately he turned to alcohol. He spent time in St Helen’s [abstaining from alcohol at the Blarney facility], and he is hoping to get into rehabilitation.”

The offences to which he pleaded guilty included stealing alcohol worth €97 from Dunnes Stores, Curraheen Road, on September 27, 2025; stealing washing pods and alcohol to a total value of €231 on February 19 this year; stealing four Yankee candles on April 16; and stealing €19 worth of alcohol on August 28 from Tesco on Paul St.

In respect of drugs, he had €150 worth of heroin at Upper John Street on June 9, 2025. On May 29, 2024, he had €180 worth of cannabis and €20 worth of heroin.

Judge David Waters imposed an overall sentence of four months on the defendant.
