Man appears in court charged with four drugs offences following major garda raid in Cork 

A man has been charged with four drugs offences after more than €320,000 worth of cannabis was seized in a major garda raid in rural Cork on Saturday.

Richard O’Brien, age 24, was arrested on Saturday after multiple searches in Mallow and in Doneraile.

Detective Garda Anthony Finn said that Mr O’Brien made no reply when charged under caution on Sunday.

Mr O’Brien faces four charges – two of drug possession for sale or supply and two of simple drug possession.

Several homes were searched in the Mallow area on Saturday and suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of approximately €208,000 was seized.

In a follow-up search in Doneraile, suspected cannabis with an estimated value of €115,000 was also seized.

The State made no objection to bail, under certain conditions, court presenter Sergeant Linda O’Leary told the court.

These include that Mr O'Brien reside at a specific home address, that he surrender his travel documents, that he remains sober in public and that he signs in at his local garda station every day.

A cash surety of €5,000 was brought to court by his mother.

Judge Colm Roberts asked if the defendant was supplying his own cash bond to the court.

Gardaí had recommended that he provide his own cash bond, Sgt O’Leary said.

“He should have some cash lodgement himself and some surety,” Judge Roberts said.

Defence solicitor David O’Meara said that his client had been in custody so had been unable to secure the cash himself.

Judge Roberts said that the defendant should lodge €2,500 with another €2,500 provided as independent surety by his mother.

Judge Roberts asked: “Does everyone understand what ‘of sober habits’ means?” The defendant replied that he did.

Judge Roberts said that he must remain free of non-prescribed drugs and he must remain sober in public and abide by all other bail conditions.

He is to remain on bail until his next appearance in court on February 23, 2027.

The drugs are to be sent for analysis by Forensic Science Ireland.

A statement of means was requested before any decision could be made on free legal aid.

Mr O’Brien, with an address at 15 The Close, College Wood, Mallow, wore a grey zipped collared sweatshirt and jeans during the hearing for Mallow District Court, sitting at Fermoy Courthouse, on Monday.

Mr O'Brien thanked Judge Roberts after his case was heard.

Saturday’s search was part of Operation Tara, the enhanced national anti-drugs strategy.

Gardaí from the Cork County Divisional Drugs Unit were assisted by the Cork County Crime Units, Regional Dog Units and the Armed Support Unit (ASU) during the operation on Saturday.
