Cork City Council has advised all those travelling into the city centre this weekend for the jazz festival to plan their journeys and to allow additional time for travel due to expected tidal flooding.

The local authority’s Flood Assessment Team met this morning as this October bank holiday weekend coincides with the highest astronomical tides this year.

“Due to the Super Spring Tides over the next two days some tidal flooding is expected around low lying quays during peak high tide times this weekend,” a council spokesperson said this afternoon.

The usual low-lying areas, including South Terrace, Union Quay, Morrison's Island, Wandesford Quay, Lavitt’s Quay and South Mall may be impacted.

“A number of road closures and lane restrictions will be necessary. Diversions will be put in place to ensure traffic can still circulate.

“Any restrictions will be eased as appropriate.

“Road users are asked to plan their journeys and to travel with caution and follow diversional signage.

“Our crews are on standby and will be working hard to ensure that the jazz weekend is as enjoyable as possible for all coming into the city centre to enjoy this year’s offering,” the council spokesperson said.

Regular updates will be posted on Cork City Council’s social media pages.

According to the latest forecast from Met Éireann, there will be some heavy spells of rain across Munster tomorrow “with a chance of thunderstorms and spot flooding”.

Highest temperatures will be between 11 to 14 degrees in moderate, occasionally fresh, south to southeast winds, backing easterly later.

Sunday is also expected to bring spells of rain, with the national forecaster stating that further spells of rain are expected next week.
