Gardaí issue a special appeal for motorists to take care following six fatal road crashes in Cork in the past month

Gardaí in Cork have made a special appeal for motorists to take care on the roads following six recent fatal crashes in the North Cork garda division.

Three of the six men killed in the crashes were motorcyclists.

Superintendent Edmund Golden of the National Roads Policing Unit joined local Gardaí at the Newtwopothouse junction in between Mallow and Charleville.

It was close to the scene of a fatal crash which occurred on Monday between a car and a truck.

Superintendent Golden highlighted the recent increase in road traffic fatalities, particularly among motorcyclists.

Traffic Inspector Joe O'Connor revealed that one driver was recently detected travelling at 238kph on the M8 motorway between Cork and Dublin, almost twice the maximum speed limit.

He also said three motorists were detected in the Cork North Division last weekend for drug driving. 

The six fatal crashes in Cork in the past month

14 July - A male motorcyclist (40s) motorcycle left the road a struck the ditch on the R619 at Kilpadder South, Dromahane.

18 July - A male motorcyclist, (19), was in a collision with a car at Knockane, Ballyclough, Mallow.

20 July - A male motorcyclist was in a collision with a car at Lisacrue, near Killeagh, on the N25 between Cork and Waterford.

1 August - A man in his 50s died after his car was in a collision with a truck on the R630, the main Midleton and Whitegate road.

10 August - A teenager was killed in a single-vehicle road traffic collision that occurred on the N25 road at Castleredmond, Midleton.

12 August - A man was killed at Newtwopothouse on the N20 Cork to Limerick road when his car was in a collision with a truck.
