Staff at the Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) were over-the-moon to receive an early Christmas present this week.

The da Vinci X surgical robot system offers surgeons advanced, innovative robotic-assisted surgical technologies. It is powered by technology that allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be translated into smaller, precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body.

10 years ago CUMH was the first hospital in Ireland to have a robot in clinical service and they are delighted to add the new arrival to the team.

Professor John R. Higgins, Clinical Director of CUMH said the whole team had high hopes of what could be achieved with the new system.

“There is a great sense of anticipation of what we might be able to do in Gynaecology in 2018,” he said.

“On behalf of all in CUMH a big thank you to the South/Southwest Hospital Group and the HSE Medical Devices for getting the word to Santa."
